Water Quality and Quantity, the challenge for the present and future.

The 2Qua project assesses the quality and quantity of water in reservoirs and raises awareness among local populations about this issue. A multidisciplinary team will conduct an integrated assessment with various ecological analyses complemented by remote sensing tools to identify responsive indicators of water quality and quantity. Stakeholders in this issue will be engaged through a citizen science plan.

Main objectives

The main objective of project 2Qua is to address the integrated evaluation of water quality and quantity in freshwater reservoirs (See ODS nº 6). In this regard, we aim to:

To assess the ecological potential of the target reservoirs (Aguieira and Rabagão), following the WFD approach, and to evaluate the contribution of information from the assessment of zooplankton community dynamics to the assessment of water quality.

To assess microplastic contamination in target reservoirs, going beyond legislation in ecological assessments, in order to identify potential sources of this contamination.

To assess the ecological potential of the target reservoirs using remote sensing tools already employed in inland waters. Furthermore, we also intend to use remote sensing tools to evaluate the amount of water available in each reservoir.

Perform an integrative analysis, using the data collected in the previous tasks to identify sensitive indicators that allow establishing a positive correlation between water quality and quantity.

Develop a strategic citizen science plan to engage local communities in minimizing impacts on target reservoirs; we aim to raise awareness and bring local citizens closer to promoting the environmental quality of reservoirs through scientific outreach activities and resources.
